This morning on the 7th of July, Election Supervisor Syndicality published the results of the newest Senatorial election, the 145th one overall. The Call for Candidates had been posted five days earlier on the 2nd, with many users (twenty-one) expressing their intention to run for office.
The campaigning period was one of the most active ones in recent times, with multiple candidates going out of their way to make posters and speak to voters.
The election ended up being won by Stalin, Saket, Kelvin, Lyoko, Hazzy, Rein, Literal, Tripod and Phobos.
Stalin was an incumbent candidate of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), who ran on a promise of abolishing practical training for the bar exam and attempted to persuade voters with his leadership experience in the Senate.
Saket of the Momentum Party (MMTM) is a new face in SimDem electoral politics, having focused mainly on serving in the SDBI and OHS until now and not on running for office. He ran on a platform of reforming the Department of Justice with his experience in law enforcement, in order to rebuild trust in the institution after the recent scandals.
Kelvin, another incumbent candidate (LDP), simply ran on a promise of “GOD BLESS SIMDEM; GOD BLESS FREEDOM”, but still ended up winning.
Lyoko (MMTM) won on a platform of stability, especially in the context of recent scandals like the impeachment of Xi4, Moved resigning and the scandal(s) surrounding ex-Senator Notcom, wanting to serve as a “stabilizing force” within the Senate.
Hazzy of the Lemon Party, having recently returned to SimDem, was one of the few candidates to campaign on concrete legislative endeavors they would pursue if elected, namely re-establishing the ability of individuals to privately prosecute crimes, even if the government refuses and making candidates in elections disclose their former criminal history.
Rein, an incumbent, but this time of The Centre, simply ran on a platform of continuing what he had already done in the last Senate: Actively debate and critique bills and hold other Senators accountable for their wrongdoings.
Literal of the Revolutionary Organization for Social Equality (ROSE), another new face in electoral politics along Saket and Hazzy, ran on a promise of reducing toxicity and ensuring member safety within SimDem by reforming the justice system with his experience as a (SimDem and real life) lawyer via addressing its underlying issues and correcting loopholes.
Tripod, another LDP candidate, promised to reform the economic system of SimDem if elected. This was supported by them (privately) starting multiple economic endeavors, such as hosting a raffle with an entry fee for discord nitro, a few days before the election.
Phobos ran on his usual promise of “leading SimDem to greatness” and being “a man of the people”, reusing the posters he also used in every election before this one.
Aside from the aforementioned candidates who won the election, there also were several political heavyweights running who didn’t get elected, namely NotLukaDebil (MMTM) running on a platform of experience, sensibility and rationality and Sunbear (an independent incumbent) who promised to continue supporting government transparency, government accountability, common sense laws and due process, like he did in his last term, which -as is apparent now- simply wasn’t enough.
Xi4, the Senator who got impeached last term, also ran for re-election but didn’t win.
Rocky (LDP) also lost the election, despite high campaigning efforts in making multiple posters and writing a page-long call-for-candidates speech. Despite losing, he has already stated he wants to spend the term legislatively-active and propose many bills to the Senate, despite not being a member of the chamber himself.
Concluding this article, the new Senators have already collectively proposed thirteen bills (most by Saket), entered two motions, and elected Stalin to the office of Speaker of the Senate after two ballots.
