Today on the 19th of July, President Thyme (Momentum Party) has issued a non-binding referendum on whether SimDem should leave the League of Servers, an international cooperative between discord polsims, created with the goal of fostering inter-server communication and cooperation.
This topic has been hotly debated for multiple weeks/months now, since ex-Senator Notcom was put onto a watchlist of terrorists by the League for raiding/couping a foreign nation, though - with the debate now in motion - many politicians critical of the League for other reasons have also decided to publicly voice their opinions.
For example ex-Secretary of Defence Strix, a vocal proponent of “SimExit” as it has been dubbed, says he believes in “SimDem Superiority” and that the League stands in direct contrast to that idea. He believes that it exerts far too great an influence on national or even international government policies of SimDem, with many current politicians “bowing” to the League’s will.
Furthermore, he argues that the League has a negative influence on SimDem’s international diplomatic soft power, stiffling SimDem’s diplomatic endeavors in international affairs, or even wars.
Q: Could you shortly summarize your views on SimDem potentially leaving the League of Servers?
A: I belive[sic] in SimDem superiority and Self Actualization. The LoS is not conducive to either goal. As it stands, the LoS is a hegemony that SimDem does not control and instead bows to on many points. This can not stand for long. So long as we operate under foot of the LoS we will not rise to the great heights we are able. The LoS has only stiffled[sic] us in diplomacy, war, and economic growth. Why be part of a union if it does not benefit us at all? If we are to have the SimDem we deserve, we must leave the LoS
On the other hand, there also are many people who believe the League is a net-good for SimDem, for example former Secretary of State Whitethommy, who points out that at no point has the League infringed on SimDem’s sovereignty by demanding particular government policy.
Furthermore, he believes that the League’s “INSERPOL” - an international counter-terrorism body tasked with ensuring international cooperation in international terrorism (server raiding, nuking, couping, etc…) - can be a useful tool in SimDem’s seemingly neverending fight against the terrorist organisation TIDE.
Lastly, he also says that - in contrary to what Strix has argued a few paragraphs above - the League actually helps SimDem’s diplomatic influence and international standing, such as when they helped SimDem in the diplomatic crisis regarding the foreign relations to Austria-Hungary (not the real one, just a discord server) by mediating between the two parties and convincing multiple of Austria-Hungary’s allies to stay out of the conflict.

Q: Could you shortly summarize your views on SimDem potentially leaving the League of Servers?
A: The League has been nothing but respectful of our sovereignty, and helpful to us when we went to them. We've worked with them throughout the conflict with TIDE to ensure their accounts are banned in more servers. They helped us during the Austria/Hungary crisis in April through helping mediate and getting two of A/H's allies to back out of the conflict.
In light of the recent mass TIDE attacks in simdem branch servers, I'm utilizing INSERPOL to buff the security on the Department of State and Lemon Party discord servers. These benefits from INSERPOL come at no cost, and there's just no cost overall to being in the League.
We've been a memberstate of the League for longer than most of us have even been in SimDem and we've never had conflicts regarding the League overstepping because that's just not what they're interested in. We may be fortunate enough to not have to depend upon the League, but by supporting an organization focused on keeping peace among discord servers that don't want to be dragged into bs wars, we are supporting the vision of a better discord, at least in the spaces that we interact.
I was a simdemmer long before I got involved in the League, and I truly believe in their vision, trust the people, and their capabilities, we just haven't had the right State Department to capitalize on it in these past few months. Now that I'm back as the Secretary of State, I intend to change the general perspective on the League, so I urge all of you to vote against SimDexit.
To get back to this article’s main topic: President Thyme has already announced that if at least two-thirds of voters in the referendum vote for “SimExit”, she would immediately have SimDem exit the League of Servers, whereas if less than two-thirds but still a majority of users were in favour, she would way her options and make a decision on her own. And if less than 50% of voters were in favour, she would do nothing.
The referendum’s result is still uncertain, with the latest polls suggesting that about 64% of active SimDem users are in favour of leaving the League, which is just two percent below the required 66.6%. With that said, if you haven’t already voted in the referendum, please do so by clicking this link.
